CARLSBAD, Calif. (Jan. 13, 2009) – LEGOLAND^® California proves to be the perfect place for single dad Jason Mesnick to take his date in an upcoming episode of “The Bachelor” airing January 19, 2009, on ABC.

This is the first time the family theme park in Carlsbad opened its gates privately to allow Mesnick, Stephanie and her daughter, Sophia, to enjoy the more than 50 rides, shows and attractions featured at LEGOLAND California. Millions of viewers watched DeAnna Pappas reject Jason Mesnick’s proposal, as he dropped to one knee to profess his love in the season finale of “The Bachelorette.” Brokenhearted and wondering how he could have misjudged DeAnna’s intentions, Jason’s female fans flocked to support him, helping him heal from his very public dismissal. Now this single dad is starring in his own bid for true love, choosing from among the remaining 12 bachelorettes.

Chrome gets Mac deadline, extensions foundation

Showing signs that it's working to meet requests for new developments to its Chrome browser, Google on Friday said it hopes to release versions for Mac OS X and Linux by the first half of the year, and it released a new version Wednesday that paves the way for the most requested feature: extensions.

Google has high hopes for Chrome--in particular, the Internet giant wants better performance, so browsing the Web is faster and Web-based applications are more powerful. Now Google is filling in some missing pieces Chrome needs in order to attain wider usage.

Brian Rakowski, Chrome's product manager, said the company wants to release Chrome for Mac and Linux before the first half of 2009 is up.

"That's what we've been hoping for," he said in an interview Friday. "Those two efforts proceeding in parallel. They're at the same level of progress."

The Mac and Linux versions are up to the level of a basic "test shell" that can show Web pages. But a test shell is pretty raw.

"That team now is able to render most Web pages pretty well. But in terms of the user experience, it's very basic," Rakowski said of the Mac version. "We have not spent any time building out features. We're still iterating on making it stable and getting the architecture right."

In an unscientific CNET News survey from November, a Mac version was the second most common barrier to getting people to switch to Chrome, trailing only faster performance. Eager beavers can monitor Google's Chrome for Mac progress and install the Mac test shell.

Extensions en route
Another major missing piece of Chrome is a framework to handle extensions, optional features that can be downloaded and plugged in to customize the browser. Extensions were one of the early advantages that helped Firefox blossom, it's the top-requested feature for Chrome, and it ranked third in the CNET survey of Chrome barriers.

But a new cutting-edge version of Chrome, 2.0.156.1, gets support for some "Greasemonkey" scripts to customize the browser, a move that lays the groundwork for extensions, Rakowski said.

"We have user script support. That's a baby step," he said. As Chrome develops, Google will "expose more capabilities, then expose containers where can you have your own toolbar-like thing. You'll see it evolve over time."

Google promised an extensions framework when Chrome launched, and more recently, Google outlined its Chrome extensions vision.

Counting Chrome
Google released Chrome 1.0 in December, just three months after the software publicly debuted, and the company is working hard to maintain a fast development pace. Wednesday's version, though not for the general public, is the first to sport the version 2 number.

Also updated with the new version is Google's Chrome release structure.

Before, Google let people subscribe to two Chrome update channels: beta and developer. The first was for relatively well-tested versions; the second for programmers, Web developers, and people with more curiosity and a higher bug threshold.

Now there are three Chrome channels: stable, beta, and developer preview.

Most folks will just use the stable version, which Google expects to update roughly once a quarter, Rakowski said. "The beta channel is now what the developer channel used to be," he added, with newer features but still a reasonable amount of testing. Newest is the developer preview channel, where code will be frequently updated and much more raw, and where Google expects some features to fail and be withdrawn.

Google expects to issue new developer preview versions roughly every couple weeks and new beta releases roughly monthly, Rakowski said.

Major new features
Version 2.0.156.1 includes many new features besides Greasemonkey support. Among them:

•Autocomplete, so Chrome can remember what you've typed into Web forms and enter them again. "A lot of people asked for that. It turns out it's more complicated than it seems on the surface," Rakowski said.

•Full-page zoom, so that using Ctrl+ and Ctrl- to increase or decrease elements on a Web page works better. Before, only text grew or shrank, but now other elements do, too.

•Browser profiles, so you can set up a browser configuration with particular settings such as bookmarks and cookies.

•The ability to import bookmarks from the Google Bookmarks site.

•Autoscroll, so clicking a mouse's middle button, then moving the mouse, lets you slide around larger pages. This is handy for panning around large images without constantly zooming in and out.

•Faster Safe Browsing, a feature to issue warnings about sites that may conduct phishing attacks or other malicious behavior.

•Under the hood, the update gets a new version of the open-source WebKit engine for converting a Web page's descriptive HTML and CSS code into the page displayed on a computer. Chrome's current stable release uses the same WebKit version as is used in Apple's Safari 3.1, but the new Chrome developer preview uses WebKit 528.8, which is faster and supports features such as CSS canvas drawing for 2D shapes such as lines on maps or custom-generated charts.

•An update of Chrome's V8 JavaScript engine from version 0.3.9.3 to 0.4.6.0. JavaScript is used for more elaborate Web pages, and the new version is faster, Rakowski said.

Missing from the new version is support for automatic discovery of Web site subscriptions through RSS and Atom "feed" technology. Google has mapped out feed support; the company plans to add it in the version 2 time frame, Rakowski said.

Title Tags are important

The Roles of the Title Tag in a Web Page

Title tags play four roles on the Internet:

First, the title is used by resource librarians, directory editors, and other webmasters when they link to your page. If you present editors with a well written title, your site will be reviewed faster and will get favorable treatment by the editors. If you submit a page with a title like this, "Title Tags - Title Tag Limit - Title Tag - Web Page Title - HTML Title Tags," then you can expect to wait for a review.
Second, the title is displayed in the search results as the most prominent piece of information available to searchers. Taking the example above, put yourself in the mind set of a search engine user who is scanning the search results. If you see a title like the one above, which is so obviously stuffed with frequently searched keyword phrases, don't you think you would consider that the Webmaster is trying a bit too hard to get your attention, putting search engine optimization far above web usability? We think so.
Third, the title is displayed by the visitor's browser (most often Microsoft Internet Explorer) in the border of the viewable screen as the visitor is viewing your website. This serves as an anchor so that the visitor knows where he or she is on your website. For this reason, titles need to clearly relate to their page and should include bread crumb or mouse trail information if there is space available. Microsoft's browser, called Internet Explorer, displays the first 95 characters of your title tag. For title tags longer than 95 characters, Internet Explorer will simply crop the tag, as you can see it has done to the title of this Web page.
Fourth, the title is used by the major search engines as the most important piece of information available in order to help them determine the topic of your page, and thus to determine the ranking of your page in their search results. Given that the title is the most important factor in your page's ranking, it can be very tempting to load the title tag with keywords. For the first three reasons mentioned above, you should avoid the temptation.

PageRank, which is largely based upon the number and quality of backlinks a webpage has, is an important factor in how well a particular webpage ranks within the Google search results. Since webmasters can spend much of their time worrying about PageRank, an important question is: how important is PageRank, really?

PageRank Only One Piece of a Larger Puzzle

Many webmasters will tell you from experience that other factors besides PageRank, such as keyword density and placement, have taken a larger role in website ranking. No one will argue that PageRank has become irrelevant, but there is significant evidence to suggest that PageRank is not quite as important of a factor in website ranking as it once was.

Check Your Google PageRank

To illustrate this point, I utilized a very useful tool you can find at PRlookup.com. The tool returns regular Google query results with one interesting addition – they also give the pagerank for every webpage. Thus, you can type in any word or phrase and see the pagerank of those webpages that rank well (or not so well) for that keyword. Looking at the results, you probably notice something almost immediately. Some sites with low PRs do surprisingly well in the results, while some higher PR sites do quite poorly.

Some of this difference can be contributed to sheer content – that is, how many times, and in what manner, the keywords you entered actually show up on the webpage. Google takes a close look at keyword usage and density in determining ranking. However, some pages clearly have very close keyword densities, yet in some cases the page with the lower pagerank will somehow still receive a better ranking.

Is SEO important?

If there is some company out who harnessed the power of SEO to build up its Internet presence, it has got to be J. Crew as reported on the New York Times. US First-lady-to-be Michelle Obama appeared on the Tonight Show, and was asked by Jay Leno for the budget for that night's outfit (allusions of Sarah Palin's alleged spending spree). But the light moment ended in favor of J. Crew, which was thanked by Mrs. Obama. The company seized the casual on-air promotion and sculpted it into a just-add-water type of marketing program.

J. Crew did its own Internet Marketing by snapping up for a price "Michelle Obama" keywords on Google, Microsoft and Yahoo, "built a page on the jcrew.com Web site that promoted her outfit (a $148 pencil skirt, a $148 yellow and brown tank top and a $118 yellow cardigan), and told call-center representatives how to handle queries about Mrs. Obama's fashion." J. Crew has refused to divulge the sales amount generated in this campaign, but they are said to be nonetheless "pleased."

So what is Search Marketing anyway? Like what J. Crew basically did, it is a style of marketing trying to make the most of the general behavior of most Internet users, which is to look up information on a major search engine such as Google or Yahoo! Search.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO), despite the fancy name, is actually one of the many methods for effective search marketing. This so-called natural method concentrates on the techniques need to effectively boost the search engine ranking of your website in the "natural" search engine results. In the example of J. Crew, what the the company was aiming for was its presence in the top 5, or top 10 search engine results whenever people look up keywords related to the new First Lady on the Internet.

But this "natural" scheme asks for the prerequisite that you "optimize" all of your web content (e.g. put the brief keywords you wish to associate with your site all over the text of your site) to spike up the chances of your website appearing within the "Natural" Search results. So-called search engine "spiders" or "web crawlers" are responsible for visiting your site, at least once to make snippets of the most important keywords appearing on your site. This information is then stored, and will be brought up on once more when people search for that keyword.

The significance of SEO, as we have emphasized, is that the closer you are to the top of the search results page, the more traffic your site will receive. Moreoever, it is said "80% of people" never click anymore to see the second page of rankings; thus their attention is focused on what appeared only on the first page. Lastly, people are begiinning to rely more often on the Internet for the information they need, for example, getting their "news" directly from Yahoo/Google search engines, as well as traditional means.

So when are you going to stop being left behind, and instead use SEO to further your business?
